Work Record 1

Work Record 1

Plans for shoot:   Discuss what you planned to do and the resources/techniques you will use.

My plan for the first shoot was to explore framing devices in an urban landscape and to see if I want to focus on outdoor framing within urban landscapes or explore other methods. Using rule of thirds to create a well composed image with some framing devices.

Research influence:

For my first shoot I wanted to focus on John Szarkowski and Eugene Atget as they have used framing devices in urban landscapes that I am able to attempt straight away. I want to focus on using the rule of thirds and creating frames using already existing elements rather than creating my own.

AO3: Record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions, reflecting critically on work and progress.
Overall my first shoot went well, I managed to get some photos that used framing devices and linked to my artists. However some of my photos did not go as well as I hoped as they were slightly over exposed or not getting the framing I was hoping for. I did manage to create some images using the rule of thirds and also create a few images using frames that were already part of the environment.

AO2Explore and select appropriate resources, media, materials, techniques and processes, reviewing and refining ideas as work develops.
For my shoot I used my Canon 5D. My camera settings were set to have a higher aperture so that it keeps the frame and subject in focus, I required that high depth of field to make my work go with my Artist and style as there photos had everything if focus. I kept my shutter speed high so that any movement was stopped and frozen.
With this photo I thought it was a tad too dark causing the man in the window being too hard to see, otherwise I think the photo works well for framing devices. I also would like to experiment with cropping out the top of the photo and maybe the left. I will use photoshop to do this.

I started by using levels to make the man a little brighter but still keeping the dark overtones. I did this by making the whites and blacks a little closer which created an edit I was happy but I still wanted to crop which I did.
I removed parts of the top, left and bottom which made the man more the focus by having him taking up much more of the frame. It also made the photo much nicer over all by removing unwanted elements.

For this photo I wanted to make it a bit darker and crop it so that the window was more centre frame as it is slightly off now.

I started off by cropping so it was tighter and had the window in centre frame.

I then went on to use levels to make the photo a bit darker and increase the contrast. Which amplified the image overall

For this photo I just want to work with the contrast in curves and use tools in photoshop to make it more level.
I started off by making the photo level by using the straighten tool in crop. This overall fixed my mistake, next time I will remember to bring a tripod.

I then went on to use the brightness and contrast tool to make it a bit brighter and increase the contrast which makes the subject stand out more with the black background and also makes it more clear that she is the subject.

For this photo I want to crop out the top part parts of the back and front making the driver more clearly the subject. Then I want to use photoshop to increase the contrast and make it a bit darker as it is a little too over exposed.

I started with cropping out the top part of the photo that wasn't part of the Taxi. I then cropped the back of the Taxi so that driver was more in the centre and clearly the subject.

I then used curves to blacks blacker and the whites whiter which increased the contrast dramatically and draws attention towards the driver. It also makes the colours much richer.

AO1: Develop ideas through sustained and focused investigations informed by contextual and other sources, demonstrating analytical and critical understanding.
Researching my artists allowed for me to focus on certain elements when shooting. The idea of car windows and shop windows allowed for me to focus on those. This allowed for me to get an understanding of Framing Devices so that I can later go on to experiment more.

AO4: Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions and, where appropriate, makes connections between visual and other elements.

Overall I like this photo as the darkness works well as it is contained in the frame which is similar to an Elliot Erwit photo. The darkness can also having connotations relating to being sinister and evil.

I like this photo as the contrast creates a well highlighted area that produces a frame that makes it clear that the driver is the subject. It does not follow the rule of thirds but it is framed well by using a window as a framing device.

I like this photo as it follows the rule of thirds by having the subject in the centre third and having the left and right third just being negative space. The change in background also creates a frame within the photo.

I like this photo because it uses the window of the Taxi to create a frame and there is a different in light that also helps as the inside is dark and the Taxi being silver creates a solid frame for the subject to be highlighted.

Progression: You must refer to what you will do next to improve on either the shoot you have done or how you will develop your project in the next shoot.

For my next outdoor location shoot I would like to work on my composition of my photos so that I don't have to crop the images, this would require me getting in closer and use a tripod. Some of my photos could have been improved by working with my camera settings to create a better exposure as some was too dark.
