Work Record 7

Work Record 7 - Composite Framing

Plans for shoot
My plan for this shoot is too explore the idea of creating composite images where one contains the subject and the other contains the frame.

Research Influence
For this shoot I am focusing on the work of Ben Heine and his Pencil vs Camera series. Overall the series follows what I want to do with the regards of composite images.
This photo contians a frame that links to the rest of the image. The holding of the paper allows for a creation of a frame and for the photographer to put anything into them. The contents of the frame is also comedic relating to the idea that it is differnet to the reality and how the photographer perceives the enviroment,
With this photo we also have a paper frame within the image, the subject within the frame contians a opposite to the actual image by it being at night and then goes on to have some unrealistic imagery by having a wild large lion running down the street. We can draw conotations to danger in the streets at night but they are safe during the day.
The paper frame contains a subject that matches the rest of the image as they both in black and white, we also get to see a different perspective on how some sees the alley and the idea of being swallowed whole. We also don't know if this is actually how the alley looks it could be the end of the alley and the photographer is adding the idea of it contonuing out. We also get connotations to escapism as the are at the end of the alley within the frame has a tree which links to the idea of escaping city life to nature.
This images varies from the others as the subject within the frame does not contain something abstract or different from the norm or what is expected. The frame instead adds something that should be there and could be there. Giving an intersting look at the subject rather than just a plain photo of the tram. It is also interesting how the subject would be moving but instead we have a freeze frame of the Tram.

AO3: Record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions, reflecting critically on work and progress.
The shoot went well. I managed to keep my aperture at 5.0 and shutter speed at around 1/40. I set my ISO to 200 for all the photos. The majority of the photos went as planed and I managed to get some photos that used a confusing and complex reflection.

AO2Explore and select appropriate resources, media, materials, techniques and processes, reviewing and refining ideas as work develops.

I started by selecting the area that I wanted the subject image to go using the select tool.
I then created a new layer from the selection

I then deleted the layer creating a blank area for my subject image to go into.
I then dragged the subject image in and moved it so it was a layer below the frame image, making the image appear through the frame.
I then created a curves adjustment. Applied it so that it only effected the subject image. Adjusted the curve so it made the subject appear through the frame more.

AO1: Develop ideas through sustained and focused investigations informed by contextual and other sources, demonstrating analytical and critical understanding.
Focusing on the work of Ben Heine inspired the majority of these photos, although he used paper and pencil I went with photoshop and used an actually frame in the first photo, the style is similar but different. Focusing on Heine inspired how I took the photos because I had to take photos that could be modified to contain another image which was helped by my previous research as I had many ideas on frames to use.

AO4: Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions and, where appropriate, makes connections between visual and other elements.

I believe that this is my strongest series of images yet. The work is partly based off the work of Ben Heine but also its own style that works well in framing the subject and it being completly different. There is parts of Florence Henri's work as the images creates some confusion as it seems not possible.
